How do the New Meters Work?

  • The upgraded meters are similar to existing electric meters on homes and business but have two-way communication capabilities.
  • A module within the meter sends total household energy use through a secure network.
  • You can view your hourly energy use online the following day.
    • Review your energy use by hour, day or month.
    • Discover energy-saving tips.
    • Receive automated alerts when your energy use is trending higher than expected.

PREPARING FOR SMART ENERGY

Step 1

You will receive a postcard about one month before your scheduled meter installation. If you have both natural gas and electric service from us, both meters will be upgraded at the same time.

Step 2

About 14 days before new meter installation, a letter will arrive with additional details about the installation and some additional helpful information.

Step 3

You will receive an automated call on the Saturday before your scheduled installation date.

Step 4

We'll leave a notice that the service was completed successfully, or indicate that another visit is necessary.

What If I Don't Want an Upgraded Meter?

If you decide not to have a new meter installed, call 888-862-2199 to be enrolled in the Manual Meter Read program. Please Note: According to Michigan law, we have to charge you for the meter. Additional costs for each electric meter associated with your account will be charged in accordance with a rate order recently approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission.

  • Initial Charge: $69.39, one-time charge if notice is given prior to meter install or $123.91 if notice is given after the meter is installed.
  • Monthly Charge: $9.72/month for service.

Your New Meter is Coming Soon

You don't need to be home the day of your scheduled installation unless the meter is located inside of your home. Here's what to expect:

  1. You'll receive a postcard 1 month before your scheduled installation.

  2. Please make sure the meter is clear of all obstructions.

  3. If the scheduled date doesn't work for you and you'd like to make an appointment for your installation, please call us at 888-862-2199.
