Identity Theft

Guard Your Utility Account Information

Identity thieves want access to your utility account. That’s why we take every precaution to safeguard your personal information. This includes asking several validating questions when we talk with you. We recommend that you be equally cautious to protect your identity. For starters, know how to recognize a phony. We’ll never contact you and ask for personal information like:

  • Your Consumers Energy online account password or User ID
  • Your User ID or password for your credit card or bank
  • Your full Social Security number and driver’s license number
We’ll never ask you to send a payment to an address that is not publicly known as being a Consumers Energy payment office. If you suspect your personal information has been unlawfully used to do business with us, please call 800-477-5050.

Reporting Identity Theft

If you’re the victim of identity theft, complete the Consumers Energy ID Theft Information Form and fax required documentation to 866-703-8115. If you don’t have access to a fax machine, call us at 800-477-5050 to make other arrangements.
